Foundation awards peer mediation grant

The West Valley Foundation has awarded a $3,000 grant to the West Valley Mediation Center to be used to fund support and training programs for advisors to peer mediation programs in area high schools. The Mediation Center, located at 6670 West Cactus Road in Glendale, is working with Sande Roberts, M.A., who established and operated a similar training program in San Mateo County, California.

Peer mediation programs train interested students to assist their classmates in resolving personal and social crises. In recent years, peer mediation has proven particularly useful in disputes involving cyberbullying and harassment based on real or perceived sexual orientation.

The West Valley Foundation was formed in 2000 as the Glendale Chamber Foundation to promote diversity education and minority businesses. The foundation ended its formal affiliation with the Glendale Chamber of Commerce earlier this year in order to expand its work throughout the West Valley. It sponsors the Cesar Chavez Celebrating Diversity Breakfast each March as its premier fundraising event.

The West Valley Mediation Center was started in 2006 by Glendale attorney and mediator Terry Mead and Amy Vavra-Mead.

Educators interested in becoming peer mediation advisors may contact the mediation center at 623-412-2508.
